Rosacea, often referred to as “adult acne” is a common skin disease. When Rosacea first appears, it may come and go causing flushing and redness to the face. This condition may begin as a tendency to flush in the center of the face and may gradually involve the cheeks, forehead, chin and nose.Small blood vessels and tiny pimples filled with pus may begin to appear around the reddened areas of the face. The ears, neck, chest and back may eventually become involved.Though tiny pimples do occur, there is an absence of blackheads associated with typical acne. This condition may last for years.
As Rosacea advances, oil glands may enlarge causing a bulbous, enlarged red nose and puffy cheeks. This condition called Rhinophyma occurs more commonly in men than women. Individuals most likely to develop Rosacea are fair skinned adults especially women between the ages of 30 and 50.
The exact cause of Rosacea is not known, however, many triggers have been identified. Those with Rosacea should avoid hot drinks, caffeine, spicy foods and alcohol. They should avoid extreme hot and cold temperatures and protect their skin with broad spectrum sunscreens. It is advisable to keep a diary of flushing and note the associated triggers documenting what foods, drinks, medications and topical products may have brought on the episode.Rosacea can be treated successfully with IPL, Intense Pulsed Light treatments and prescription topical treatments.
IPL Treatments take about 30 minutes.Intense pulses of light penetrate to all levels of the dermis causing collagen and blood vessels beneath the epidermis to constrict.Although skin may appear a bit pink for a few hours after IPL treatment, there is no downtime. The result is a lessening of the appearance of large pores associated with Rosacea and a marked reduction in chronic facial redness.
Added benefits to IPL treatments include a lessening of fine lines and wrinkles due to increased collagen production, an evening out of skin tone and reduction of sun damage.Skin may appear tighter and smoother with improvement in texture and refinement as the treatments progress.A series of 6 treatments is recommended for maximum results.
